Dimensions: 50 x 40 yard field with a goal at either end. Cone off a diamond inside the field and set up two even teams. Normal game rules apply. Two wing players from either team occupy the outer diamond, the remaining players occupy the centre of the diamond, players are not allowed outside of their section.

How to: Normal practice game rules apply, attempt to score against your opponents whilst adhering to the conditions of the game.

Coaching Points: The inner diamond may get congested, try to work the ball into areas where the wingers may support in attack, as the wingers cannot enter the inner diamond, you will always have width available, be sure to use it to stretch the defense and create gaps to attack. The diamond allows the wing players to defend and attack, this will simulate their roles in game situations, remember to feed back to players when a certain situation worked, or what could have gone better, allow players to discuss this amongst themselves too.

Defense into Attack with forced shape – Full backs in attack

How to: 35 x 25 yard area with a goal and goalkeeper. Field marked as shown, the idea is to change a 3-3-1 in defense to a 1-2-1-3 in attack by pushing the wing backs on aggressively.

Key Differences: The emphasis on the midfield players is now to hold a shape rather than over commit into attack. The wing backs will be working much harder here, ensure you rotate players regularly.

Late Runs Small Sided Soccer Game

How To: Play a 3v3 inside a 30 x 30 yard area with one goal. Attack vs Defense. Attacking team have two extra players in an end zone to support in the build up play. One player can also join in the attack to make a 4v3 but they are only allowed one touch per entry (a first time shot or a key pass.)

Coaching Points: You’re only allowed one touch, identify your space, call for the pass and attack the ball. Be positive, You may notice your team mates drag the defenders deep leaving space around the penalty spot. Sometimes your team mate may drop deep and you notice space in behind the defender. Be creative, watch the field develop and take a chance! Be positive.
