Dimensions: 45x 45 yard square with a goal at either end. Mark out a line 5 yards in from either touchline; these sections will be for the wide players.
How To: Players get into teams of two and stand next to each goalpost starting at the same end. This will be the start position. Have groups line up by each goal to aid the flow of the session.
Start with the balls with the players on the right goal post. The first pair in play makes two passes; the first pass is to their partner who passes the ball out wide to the winger who will be in the coned-off channel. The winger will then dribble the ball up field and cross in for the two players to attempt to finish.
Players collect their soccer ball and line up by the goal they have just taken a shot on. Once play has concluded, the next pair set off making two quick passes, one to their partner and one out wide to their right. Rotate midfielders every few minutes.
Coaching Points: Pass quickly so the ball can be distributed wide to the winger early. The emphasis is on delivering the cross. Players in the middle shouldn’t be dribbling the ball but getting used to watching their winger and anticipating the cross.
Encourage the wingers to play the ball into dangerous areas rather than attempt to pick out players too much. An example of this would be aiming for the edge of the 6 yard box in the areas of uncertainty. Encourage creativity here.
The two receivers of the cross should time their runs. Be careful not to edge offside; make sure to run into dangerous areas.
Communication is key. If the ball is coming to you, call out so your teammate knows you have claimed it.
Improvise with the shot on goal. There won’t be a great deal of time to get your shot away once the ball is crossed into you. Getting any legal contact on the soccer ball when you are in the area could result in a goal. Be creative.
Progressions: Early crosses: Get your wingers to deliver an early cross from deep. Find your teammate. Once the ball is crossed in, one pass needs to be made before
you can shoot.
High Balls: Cross high to encourage headed finishes.
